A New Vision for Prosperity in the 21st Century
This book will outline a new vision for prosperity in the 21st century, by offering ideas to solve the problems that make up the Raw Deal. I have organized the roadmap of potential solutions under three themes:
- Advancing Inclusive Governance to win back the public trust.
- Investing With Purpose to address the long-term sustainable development challenge
- Empowering Local Communities to become innovative, connected, entrepreneurial hubs in a globalizing world.
Under each theme, there are various political, regulatory, technological, and investment prescriptions. While these are all important considerations, positive change will require each of us, as citizens, to make good choices.
As citizens, each of us holds a portfolio of roles in society—as voters, parents, school principals, public officials, judges, union representatives, employees, consumers, investors, board members, bloggers, journalists, and the list goes on. Each role endows us with the power to express our values, influence others, and shape the future. The personal choices we make about how we educate our children, what products we buy, the jobs we choose to take, and the companies we support with our investment all leave a lasting imprint. For better or worse, our choices profoundly affect important outcomes such as the civic engagement of our youth, the social responsibility of businesses, and the sustainable stewardship of the environment.
The more we act with consistent authenticity across all our roles in society, the greater our personal impact. In this book, I will share many inspiring stories of citizens who are infusing a common purpose into all their endeavors. We will meet students who are turning away from “traditional” high-paying careers to launch social enterprises that solve problems they deeply care about. We will see how the leaders of many faith-based organizations are making the conscientious move to remove hydrocarbon stocks from their investment portfolios. We will also encounter city mayors who are enacting sustainable policies in their local community—even when national government remains too paralyzed to act.
When bold citizens make principled choices and generate prosperity from purpose, they inspire followers. And with the collective support of a population, large-scale change becomes possible. Throughout this book, I will endeavor to distill how people can think about key choices in order to make a positive difference—a Citizen’s Guide, if you will.
